Thinking of remodeling your Des Moines home? Maybe you’ve got an old bathroom that’s begging for some TLC or a guest bedroom that you just never got around to decorating. Whatever the case, if you’re in the market to make any improvements to your home or yard, a home show is the place to find inspiration, get advice, network with professionals and maybe even score a few great deals.
In this article, we’ll share the scoop on the top home shows that happen in Des Moines, Iowa every year. We’ll tell you where and when they’re held, what you can expect and what you should specifically look out for at each show.
Des Moines Home + Garden Show
The Des Moines Home + Garden Show is held every February at the Iowa Events Center in downtown Des Moines. This four-day event features more than 400 exhibitors and regularly draws upwards of 30,000 attendees.
Thanks to the show’s timing just before the start of spring, the ‘Feature Gardens’ are one of the most anticipated points of interest at this event every year. In these living exhibits, event-goers can browse new landscaping styles, learn about the best foliage to plant, discover tips for longevity and functionality, and ask advice from expert gardeners.
At the ‘Inspiration Stage,’ you’ll enjoy a lineup of presentations from architects, landscapers and local designers sharing their expertise. The event features keynotes from celebrity guests, which usually include television personalities from popular design shows on networks like HGTV and the DIY Network. One notable 2019 guest was Barry Williams of ‘The Brady Bunch’ fame.
When you check the exhibitor lineup on the event’s website, make note of the various DIY booths that offer ‘make it and take it’ gifts for family and friends. You can also enter for the chance to win some big-ticket giveaways; popular prizes from the most recent show included a home security system valued at $2,000 and a trip to Hawaii to build a home with Habitat for Humanity.
If you come to the Des Moines Home + Garden Show, be sure to stick around for the plant sale, which happens after 5 p.m. on the last day of the event. It’s a bargain shopper’s dream come true as garden exhibitors dismantle their booths and offer attendees major deals on their flowers, shrubs, and trees.
Federal government employees receive free admission all days of the show with a valid federal ID.
Des Moines Home Show Expo
The Des Moines Home Show Expo is hosted annually by the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines. It’s held over the course of three long weekends each July at a residential development in the Des Moines metro area, with the location changing every year.
During the Home Show Expo, attendees can walk between a selection of houses on the same street or within the same neighborhood, each one designed and constructed by a different local builder. If you’re in the market to build a new house, it’s a great way to get a feel for which builder might share your vision and style. Or, if you already own a home, it’s an opportunity to check out the latest decor and design styles firsthand before you take the plunge into updating your space.
In addition to seeing local builders’ architectural skills in action, you’ll also be able to browse a wide selection of home furnishings and decor from local retailers that are incorporated into the rooms of each house.
Des Moines Home + Outdoor Living Show
Held every spring at the Iowa Events Center, the Des Moines Home + Outdoor Living Show is all about helping you make the most of your outdoor living space.
The three-day show features more than 100 exhibitors displaying the latest and greatest in appliances, recreation, pools, and spas, fencing, you name it–if it’s something you can use to enjoy and beautify your outdoor space, you’ll find it here. The event has a special focus on current trends; 2018’s show, for example, included specific exhibits dedicated to tiny homes, “he-sheds” and “she-sheds,” and personal greenhouses.
For retailers in the outdoor living market, the show is a great opportunity to get new products in front of prospective buyers; the average household income of the event’s 14,000 attendees is $107,000.
Des Moines Home and Remodeling Show
If you have a coffee table covered with design magazines and a Pinterest board filled with DIY projects, the Des Moines Home and Remodeling Show is an event you won’t want to miss.
Hosted by the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines every February, the event is meant to connect residents with local professionals who can share their expertise on around-the-house projects. Each day has a unique lineup of how-to demonstrations, from the practical (like refinishing your cabinets and caring for your countertops) to the conceptual (like bringing your vision to life and creating a timeless home).
The Home and Remodeling Show is held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Parking, admission, and seminars are all free of charge, so it’s not only a fun and informative event but a low-cost way to spend a weekend.
Tour Of Remodeled Homes
The Remodelers Council of Greater Des Moines is a dedicated group of remodeling professionals including contractors, designers and building material suppliers. Every fall, the organization hosts the annual Tour of Remodeled Homes spanning the greater Des Moines area.
The tour is comprised of an assortment of completed remodeling projects across central Iowa that attendees are invited to visit. With a single ticket, visitors can browse more than a dozen remodeled homes and speak with the experts behind each project.
Whether you’re looking to do something simple, like replace worn-out carpet, or complex, like add an entire wing to your home or refinish your basement, the Tour of Remodeled Homes will provide inspiration and insight into what your completed project could look like with a bit of elbow grease and a capable remodeling partner.
If you can’t make it to all of the homes featured on the tour in person, there are a beautiful selection of photos of each house available on the event’s website.
